Pecans are the only major tree nuts indigenousness to North America and as a result are one of the most recently commercially cultivated crops in the industry. The United States is the leading producer of pecans with Georgia, Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma being the top producers respectively. Mexico, South Africa and Australia also produce pecans in notable quantities. Pecans are a good source of protein and unsaturated fats, and the FDA has made note of their ability to lower cholesterol.
