Hazelnuts are considered one of the world’s most plentiful nuts. Cultivation of hazelnuts is simple as the nuts fall from the tress in mid autumn and are then gathered by mechanical or manual sweepers that pick them up for processing. Turkey remains the largest producer of hazelnuts accounting for nearly 75% of the world market. Other producers include Italy, the United States, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Spain. The majority of hazelnut production in the United States is done in Oregon and Washington although recent orchard plantation in California is likely to increase production. Hazelnuts nutritional value primarily consists of oleic acid, protein, carbohydrates, vitamin E, minerals, diabetic fibers, phytosterol (beta-cytosterol) and antioxidant phenolics.
