Figs have no blossoms on their branches as the flowers are located inside the fruit, giving figs their unique texture. Fig production is concentrated heavily around the Mediterranean region with Turkey and Iran being the top producers. California is home to a wide variety of figs but mainly produces the golden Calimyrna and the sweet dark Mission. Figs are one of the highest plant sources of calcium, as well as phosphorous, potassium, beta-carotene, vitamin C, and they are a high source of fiber and iron with no fat, sodium, or cholesterol. Harvesting takes place mostly in late summer through early fall but dried figs are usually available year round.
